Professor of Sustainable Construction, School of Architecture and Environment, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)
Professor Moncaster has a particular focus on the life cycle assessment and embodied impacts of buildings and urban environments, applying the principles of the circular economy to the built environment, and retrofitting existing buildings. A growing interest is in resilience and adaptation for future climates. With a first degree in engineering from Cambridge, followed by several years experience in the construction industry, Alice’s PhD then focused on developing a socio-technical understanding of the practices and processes of design and construction, considering how and why decisions about sustainability are made in building projects. She has since held academic positions at the University of Cambridge, the Open University and UWE in Bristol. Reflecting her interdisciplinary background her research has had a dual nature, with on the one hand purely technical analysis of environmental impacts of construction and design decisions, and on the other a continuation of her fascination with the sociology of construction practices. This has been reflected in her projects and publications and in particular her doctoral students. For more information please see the links below:
